Reading Like a Writer: Master Close Reading and Improve Your Writing

Close reading is an essential skill for all writers, where we evaluate the story as we read it. In this session, we’ll discuss techniques for effective close reading, reviewing one aspect of storytelling at a time to see how it makes the story tick. We’ll examine excerpts of published works then we’ll break them down into craft notes. By the end of this session, you’ll be able to use these methods to examine a story with a writer’s eye. You’ll learn how to identify the choices the author made and discover how to use those techniques to the desired effect in your own writing.
